★★★★★
As an existing Satrap user this is a great app. Gives me access to all my saved walking routes on the web based version superimposed on OS 25 maps at a very high quality. Very nice semi transparent route line which does not obscure the map details under the line (unlike the web version). Look forward to trying it out tomorrow. Have now used it for 3 local walks. Have also looked through the earlier reviews especially those concentrating on the cost. 1) The way I use the Satrap system, the £25 a year option is fantastic value for money since it gives access to good maps for much of the world and certainly all of Europe. 2) I do all of my planning on the Expedition2 at home on Windows desktop or laptop. I walk over 2000 miles a year across Europe so do quite a lot of planning. 3) When abroad I am now hoping that the phone option will give me some screen mapping. Currently, where I do not have a local map for the Satrap device I just load the route on a blank background. Massively better than nothing. 4) Walks led by others or unplanned walks can be captured either on the Satrap device or now the phone. 5) My phone is a Samsung J5 and not really up to the job. The app needs a lot of battery and memory for downloaded maps. I can only do about 8 miles on a full battery. Serious app users will be using a much better phone than my current one. 6) It has asked me to sign back into Expedition during a walk (a pain) but still appeared to carry on following the route. 7) To my mind this app is a great addition to having a Satrap device - not a replacement. The Satrap device is massively easier to use during a walk and has much more battery life. 8) UK only walkers may prefer OS Maps which is a pretty good app but still costs about the same but no mapping for other countries.

I have used the Satrap device for over 10 years. I could not be without it. I also plan routes using xPedition2 on the laptop. Now I have started using the Explorer app on the phone, and it is just as good. Very similar to the Satrap. I cannot really fault it. I have tried other phone apps like Hiker and Komoot, but Explorer is by far the best. If you get this you should link it to xPedition2 on the computer for planning routes.
★★☆☆☆
Would have been great if I could have used my expensive maps for my expensive and now unsupported satrap device. The info suggests that this is possible, and you can still buy downloadable maps, which I haven't tried to do. However, they don't respond to emails and I have now given up. There are better apps out there that give great mapping and routes either free or for less money than you would spend with this lot.
★★☆☆☆
Very disappointed. I have a web expedition subscription and I thought that once I logged in I would have my expedition routes available. Not the case. On web based expedition, even when NOT logged in to account you have the free Adventure maps and the free OpenStreetMap. Not the case in this app. Very disappointed.
